At some point on our fitness journey we all ask the question, "How many calories do I need to lose weight?"

Finding the right answer can often be as difficult as finding the Holy Grail. There are a number of theories out there, so figuring out what works best for you can be time consuming and frustrating.

The first thing to keep in mind is that we are all different. We all have different bodies, metabolisms and issues, so although calorie formulas can give us a ballpark number, these numbers are just a guide. Take some time to play around with the numbers to essentially figure out what works best in your world.

Below is a video that I made that talks about the Harris Benedict Formula and why it is one of my favorite ways to calculate how many calories you need to lose weight. I really like it because it factors in your age, weight, height, activity level and gender when determining how many caloriesy you need to maintain your weight and to lose weight as well.

This video will walk you through the process of figuring out how many calories you need to lose weight and also ensure that you're taking in the appropriate amounts of protein/carbs/fats as well.

Also, remember to put GOOD calories into your body. Eat clean, natural foods and avoid junk, processed foods. Your body needs good fuel in the engine to fuel it for a great performance at workout time!

Sometimes I think the scale hates me even worse.

Talk about frustrating!

So, here's the deal. There can be a variety of reasons why the numbers on the scale won't budge and I've taken a few minutes to talk about them in a short video.
Let's Talk about the ViSalus Scam

There are hundreds if not millions of weight loss programs out there, and I'm sure every one has been called a scam at some point, including the ViSalus Scam. Heck, I bet even eating right and exercising has been called a scam by someone!

Here's the deal. Some are scams. Some are not. Often we hear the name "scam" from competitors who get into the whole "mine is better than yours" mentality, and proclaim to the world that the other guys' stuff is pure garbage without really even knowing what is in the products to begin with.

So, I'll be honest. For about a year and a half I was a ViSalus promoter. Yeah, I said the dreaded "V" word. After a while I decided to switch teams and move to Beachbody, and have not regretted my move one bit. Does that mean that I think ViSalus products are crap? Absolutely not. I have friends and family who have had success with the Vi-Shakes, so I cannot discredit their success.

However, today I'd like to talk about few differences between the ViSalus and Beachbody products, as I know that there are a lot of people out there who are curious. And since I am familiar with both, I feel that I can give you an informed, unbiased opinion. I may compose another blog post in the future discussing the difference between the 2 marketing systems as well. But for today--we're talking about products.

There are some basic differences between ViSalus and Beachbody. For starters, ViSalus promotes mainly their meal replacement shake, the Vi-Shake as well as some energy drinks and nutra cookies, metabolism booster pills and appetite control powder. Their Vi-Shake includes protein, fibre, and the nutrition from all of the food groups. Beachbody has a protein shake called Shakeology as well as other nutritional items (recovery drinks, energy drinks, protein bars, etc) and a variety of popular workout programs. For today's discussion I've decided to talk about the 2 different shakes as well as Beachbody's Ultimate Reset.

Here are some basic difference between the 2 shakes:

**The nutritional values are based on the Canadian version. I believe the American numbers are slightly different.

~ The Vi-Shake has 12 g of protein, whereas Shakeology has 17 g of protein.
~ The protein in the ViShake is mainly whey protein whereas the protein in Shakeology comes from all natural sources like pea protein, sprouted rice protein, chia, sprouted quinoa, and sprouted amaranth, to name a few. It's all natural.
~ The Vi-Shake has 2 g of fibre whereas Shakeology has 6 b of fibre.
~ The Vi-Shake as <1 g of sugar, whereas Shakeology has 6 g of sugar. Some people take issue with the fact that there is sucralose in the Vi-Shake.
~ One of the big selling features of the Vi-Shake is based on the fact that they advertise that there is the nutrition from a whole host of different foods in it (pineapple, asparagus, tomatoes, chicken breasts, etc), however it's really difficult to get a handle on what is exactly in it--as those actual foods aren't actually listed in the ingredient list. On the other hand, Shakeology has what's called an antioxidant superfood blend in it (they compare it to going to the salad bar 5 times) and some of the foods in the ingredient list include cacao, coconut flour nectqar, acerola cherry, pomegranate, bilberry, blueberry, goji berry, grape seed, Himalayan salt, etc. It's all recognizable food that you have seen before. And again, all natural.
~ I really like the fact that Shakeology is made from all natural ingredients. I don't have to worry about the "unkown" stuff that I am putting in my body.
~ The Vi-Shake comes in only one flavor--Sweet Cream. They call it the shake mix that tastes like a cake mix. It does taste very good, and blends up nicely with other ingredients. Shakeology comes in a few flavors, including Chocolate, Greenberry, & Tropical Strawberry. They also have vegan versions too, which is one thing that ViSalus doesn't.
~ Shakeology does not have a vanilla flavored Shakeology because that would require them to add artificial flavor to the mix, which they refuse to do. It has to be all natural.
~ Both taste good. Shakeology does seem to mix up into a bit thicker shake, which is something that I like.
~ ViSalus has a "3 for Free" deal where if you find 3 people to get kits from you, you can earn your kit for free. This can be a pretty sweet deal, but sometimes it can be challenging to convince others to get kits, and have them continually buying so you can earn your kit for free. It also takes a lot of work making sure that you always have 3 people buying under you too. As well, in the past ViSalus has changed the "3 for Free" rules limiting the ways promoters could earn their kit for free, and did so without telling anyone, which really upset a great deal of people in the company.
~ Shakeology does not have a "3 for Free" program, however you can get free shipping on your kit by ordering it via a monthly autoship called Home Direct. You can cancel at any point, penalty free, which is nice. People who buy Shakeology every month can also become Discount Coaches (they are never required to do any active coaching) and then they can earn a 25% discount on not only Shakeology, but everything they buy from Beachbody, including supplements, protein bars, gear and workout programs. It's a great way to get the Beachbody products at a reduced price.

ViSalus vs The Ultimate Reset

Beachbody also offers a program called The Ultimate Reset which has become an increasingly popular way for people to not only get healthy, but to shed pounds too. Since I've used both the Vi-Shakes and the Ultimate Reset to lose weight, I thought I'd take some time to talk about both.

The Vi-Shakes help people lose weight in the fact that participants are required to take 2 shakes per day. There is also a basic meal plan for clients to use, however one complaint from many clients has been the fact that they are often not given a great deal of guidance regarding what to eat the rest of the day.

The Ultimate Reset is quite different. It involves participants taking a series of supplements throughout the day (pills/powder/mineralize) and following a detailed meal plan for 21 days. The meal plan is split into 3, week-long phases where animal protein is gradually eliminated from the diet. The combination of the vegetable/fruit based diet with the supplements allows the body to detox itself, eliminating all of the garbage/toxins from its system--where by the end of the 21 days your body has essentially 'reset' itself and is in a much healthier state. People have been relieved of digestive problems and have found that their cholesterol is much improved.

I like the Ultimate Reset because not only have I lost a good chunk of weight in 21 days, it has really taught me what foods to eat and what to stay away from for optimal health. I think I will have a much better chance of keeping the weight off because now I have a solid plan for the future. However, with ViSalus, once I stopped taking the shakes I gained the weight back because I hadn't learned anything about what foods worked best for me.

I also liked the fact that with the Ultimate Reset I am eating real food. Taking 2 shakes a day was a turn off to many potential clients, as they didn't really like the idea of drinking all of their meals. With the Ultimate Reset, however, all of the meals were incredibly tasty and easy to prepare, and I never felt that I was being denied anything.

Best Way to Lose Fat

I'll be honest here. If you want to lose fat, you need to eat properly and exercise. There is just no getting around it. One thing that has been a thorn in ViSalus's side is the fact that it has often been called a 'magic pill solution.' People have refused to even try it because they see it as a gimmick, and others have fallen into the trap of thinking that they can eat garbage and drink shakes and still lose weight.

The Ultimate Reset is not and has never been viewed as a magic pill solution. Anyone who has done it can attest to the fact that it requires time, commitment and hard work--as any good diet plan will. If you want to lose weight and get healthy, then you will need to make MAJOR changes in the kitchen and this program will help you to do so. It will teach you what to put into your body, what to avoid, and it will also keep you on the meal plan long enough for your body to adapt to the new routine and make it a habit. There is a lot of truth to the adage, "21 Days to Make a Habit." By the end of the program your tastes will have changed, you may crave new foods and dislike your old comfort foods, and your body will have released all of the toxins and garbage, making you healthier than before. You'll appreciate vegetables a whole lot more, and have a new appreciation for how drastically good food can impact your body and your life.

I also like the fact that with Beachbody, not only do you have access to a whole host of nutritional items like Shakeology, The Ultimate Reset etc., you also have the opportunity to invest in a whole host of different workout programs to help you shed those pounds and get in the best shape of your life. You are never left alone to navigate through these programs on your own either, as coaches like me are always available for guidance and support. And the coaching is FREE!! Let's face it, losing weight and getting healthy involves following a good diet and exercising, so with Beachbody you get both, which to me, makes a better recipe for success.

In my opinion the Vi-Shakes do not do any of that. Not even close.

So, to close, is there such a thing as a ViSalus scam? No, I don't think so. I just think that there are more effective products on the market that help you learn what to eat and what to avoid, and therefore will give you a winning chance of achieving long term success. And the Ultimate Reset is one of them.
It has a reputation for being particularly gruelling, to the point where people have a tendency to get all Harry Potterish and whisper it like "He Who Must Not Be Named"....

So if you're at all curious about this program because you've decided you'd like to get fit or lose a few pounds but aren't sure if it's for you, well, you've come to the right place.

Here is my no holds barred Insanity Review.

Basic Info:

Here's the deal. Insanity is tough, but it is entirely doable. They weren't lying when they said it was...well...Insane. There is no cardio program out there like it, plain and simple. It will make you work, it will make you work, and yes, it might even make you barf....just a little.

It is a 60 day program that is essentially divided into 2 months, separated by a recovery week.

They are all essentially cardio workouts, but with a variety of different moves, involving power jumps, football drills, suicide jumps, and floor drills.

Each week there is a 'recovery workout' included that involves stretching etc., but don't let the name fool you, it's still a workout.

You can do this in a small space, like in your living room. Some even do it in their garages, although I would suggest using a rubber flooring matt to add some cushioning to protect your joints.

You don't need any weights or other equipment for this workout (a yoga matt comes in handy), which is something that I like. So if you travel a lot and workout in your hotel--this would be a good choice, but I would suggest that you ask for a ground floor room so you don't annoy the people underneath you.

The month 1 workouts are around the 40 minute mark, and the month 2 workouts are about an hour.

The warm up for all workouts are about 10 minutes, followed by a very thorough stretch.

My Opinion:

I love Insanity. Sure, it's tough, but nothing worthwhile comes without some blood sweat and tears. I think for some reason we get this notion that we should be able to achieve great things easily, which really isn't reality. The people who look really good--you know, the ones with the tight midsections and toned abs--they work for it!! And so it's okay if Insanity is tough. It's supposed to be!! But if you work hard and stick with it--you'll see results too!!

You don't have to be a seasoned or professional athlete to benefit from this program. It doesn't matter if you have to take breaks or modify the moves, or feel like you look a bit ridiculous doing the "In & Outs", if you work hard and try your best, you will see results.

Many people get really discouraged (and may even quit) at the beginning of the program when they see how tough the program is. Don't let the 'toughness' of the program intimidate you. Sure, it's tough, but if you stick with it--and do your best--you will get stronger each time you do the workout--and your performance will improve. No matter what shape you're in when you start, you will get fitter and stronger each week-so DON'T QUIT!!

I find that most people start off having to take a lot of breaks when they first start out, and that is perfectly OK. Your motto doing this program should be strive for progress, not perfection. If you keep working, day after day, you will get stronger and stronger, you'll have to take fewer breaks, your form will get better and you will get fitter. So, it is OK to take breaks! Push yourself as hard as you can, and you will see results.

What to Expect:

~ Sore feet/knees:

A common complaint from people starting Insanity is sore feet and knees. This can be caused by a couple of different factors, with improper shoes being one of them. Many people doing Insanity recommend wearing cross trainers simply because they provide substantial ankle support for those side to side movements. However, the thing is, during the entire program you will be doing a lot of jumping and floor moves which will put a strain on the arches of your feet. I used to work at a major running store and really appreciate the importance of having proper footwear. If your arches fall inward (or 'overpronate') then you need to make sure that you are wearing shoes that provide the appropriate amount of arch support to prevent those arches from collapsing inward. If you are an overpronator and don't wear the right shoes during these workouts you really run the risk of hurting yourself--and a common injury is plantar facciitis (really sore feet at the bottom of your foot), or achilles or knee injuries.

See the video below that talks further about wearing proper footwear:

So, the long and short of it is--you definitely want to make sure you are wearing appropriate footwear. Running shoes are specifically designed to provide great cushioning and support to meet individual needs, and would be my choice of footwear. No, they aren't as sturdy as cross trainers in the ankle department, but my advice would be to really focus on working from your core during all the moves, and get your power from the core/hips/butt area to prevent your knees and ankles from taking the brunt of the impact. Keep your core tight, land softly, and save your knees and ankles.

If you are at all curious about shoes, I would suggest visiting a specialty running store. The staff there will be able to look at your feet and watch you walk and determine what category of shoe you should be in, and help you find the right shoe for your arches. If you live in Canada, The Running Room is a good choice, but there are loads of other great specialty running stores out there too. You might also want to take your old shoes in with you too, as the staff there can look at the wear pattern on the bottom to see what your 'feet are doing.'

Also, here is an article I wrote about proper footwear. It explains the categories and 'shoe use' in more detail: Click here for the article.

And finally, if your feet are sore, a good trick to ease the pain/discomfort is to roll either a tennis ball or frozen filled water bottle over your feet to massage them. You can place the bottle on the floor and then roll your feet over it as you sit on a chair. The ice will help with the inflammation and the massaging action will help loosen things up.

I have also found that if you ease into things, and swap some cross training in when things are really sore--and use the tennis ball/water bottle method--eventually your feet adapt to the new moves and don't bother you anymore.

~ Soreness in general:

Let's face it, when we begin any new workout program, it's inevitable that we'll be sore. Soreness because you've worked hard is not bad. Soreness because you've hurt yourself is. The first thing that I would recommend as you embark on this journey is to invest in a good recovery drink. We 'budding athletes' these days are very lucky in that the big sports companies have been able to develop amazing products that can truly help our bodies perform better and recover faster; and it is important to use this stuff if you want to make progress in your program. Years and years ago I trained for a full marathon. I'd run 17 to 20 miles on Sunday and would be so freaking sore for the rest of the week that my mid-week runs would really suffer. Nowadays we don't have to go through that kind of agony. Taking a good recovery drink immediately after you workout will ensure that you not only don't have that 'gassed out' feeling for the rest of the day, but that your muscles won't be sore the next day either. That way, you'll be able to perform to your maximum potential every day of the week, which is very important. You'll also be ensuring that you are helping repair your muscles from the exercises, which will definitely help in injury prevention. There are a number of great products on the market, and Beachbody does have a good recovery drink which is comparable in price to store bought ones too.

Also, if you do find that you have sore muscles/knees etc. I would suggest the old RICE method: Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. Nothing soothes sore muscles like a good old bag of ice or frozen peas. You might also want to invest in Glucosamine, a supplement that is great for joint health. And remember, this isn't a race, so if you are really sore, or maybe wondering if you've stumbled upon a slight injury, it is always a good idea to listen to your body and either do some cross training of a different body part or take a day or 2 off. Sure, it isn't fun delaying your progress in the program by a day or two, but it beats a long term break from pushing yourself too hard and hurting yourself.

~ Increased Appetite:

Many of us sign up for these programs because we want to lose weight, and yes, many of us think that in order to lose weight we really need to cut the calories. But here's the deal. If you want to perform to your maximum potential in these programs, you are going to need to fuel your body appropriately. And that means taking in GOOD calories. Once you get into these programs you will likely notice that your metabolism is being charged up, and you're hungrier more. That is okay. Be sure to look at the nutrition guides and determine the appropriate number of calories you should be taking in to either gain/maintain/lose weight, depending on what your goals are. You may find that you are hungrier than before, and crave different types of foods, and that's okay. Your body is a machine, and you need to fuel it up well. I'll post a separate article about nutrition shortly.

~ Motivation "Up's and Down's":

You aren't going to feel like a rock star every day. Some day you're going to really feel like working out and will crush Shaun T and those ski ab's. Some day's you'll struggle to get your shoes and sports bra on. That's normal. Rome wasn't built in a day, and hey, life happens. The key is to really focus on what exactly you want to get out of doing this program--those specific goals you've developed, and stay committed to that. Your friends and family may not entirely support your quest so really get in tune with what is driving you forward. This is your journey, and yours alone. If you stick with the program and make a commitment to getting the job done every single day (whether you feel like it or not), you will see amazing results. And that is why this group is so important. We get it. We are all in this boat together and so you will always have other people who understand what you're going through and why you're doing this. Stick with us, stay the course, and you will reach your goals!!

So what is this Shakeology stuff all about anyway? Just for bulky bodybuilders? Just for elite athletes who wear speedos to run marathons?

Nope.
My Shakeology Review is this in a nutshell: it will make you feel good. It will help control your cravings. It's a good meal on the go. It's the right thing to do.
I'm generally not the type to rant and rave about stuff, but the longer I deal with Beachbody, the more impressed I am with their products.

I've used a number of different protein shakes over the years and really do believe that this one stands out among the others, for a few simple reasons.

Here are the top 10 reasons why I love Shakeology:

1) It tastes way better.

2) It has a really good source of fibre...and one can't go wrong with fibre!

3) It has a fantastic source of protein which is ALL NATURAL, including things like pea protein, quinoa, sprouted brown rice, chia, flax.....the list goes on. You don't generally see words like that popping up on many other protein shake tubs.

4) It contains a whole host of other superfoods to make you crazy healthy, like acerola cherry, blueberry, goji berry, grape seed, green tea, pomegranate.....loads of stuff that will make you feel fantastic!

5) It is an excellent way to get top notch nutrition into your body ON THE GO!! Being busy does not have to mean that you diet suffers. Grab a shaker cup and improve your health. It's that easy.
6) It has really helped me get control over my cravings. When I use Shakeology I don't crave/think about all the food I shouldn't be eating.
7) It makes me feel good, actually GREAT! I have energy galore!
8) It helps me stay healthy. I am not nearly as prone to colds and flu bugs when I use Shakeology regularly.
9) It helps me stay on a structured meal plan. I eat better through the rest of the day when I have a Shakeology in the morning.
10) Did I mention it tastes great?

It's a 21 day detox/cleanse diet that gets rid of all the garbage in your system leaving your body healthier. One great side effect is also weight loss. So, I'm done my first week, and for any of you out there who are curious, I just thought I'd give you a bit of info.
My Ultimate Reset Review

~ So far I've lost 6 lbs.
~ My midsection is way smaller and I look considerably better.
~ Before I started I was craving/eating way more sugary crap than I needed to--and I haven't craved that stuff at all since I started. My eating is under control and my cravings are gone.
~ The meals/recipes taste fantastic and are very easy to prepare.
~ I've felt really good the whole week. Some people who drink coffee can experience withdrawal headaches. (so if you're going to do this--it's best to wean yourself off of coffee first)
~ I am way more energized. I used to have a terrible time getting up in the morning, but now when the alarm goes off I can get up, no problem.

If you need to lose weight, or find that certain foods are bothering you (digestion/stomach problems, bloating etc), or just want to get healthy, I would HIGHLY recommend this program for you. It has changed my life. No Joke!!
In a way it's been a real eye opener for me, in a few different ways. I know people who have done it before me and commented that it really taught them a lot about what foods to eat and what to stay away from, as well as what portion sizes were appropriate for them. In some cases it has helped them to the degree that not only is this the lowest they've weighed in years, but also maybe the best they've felt too. And yet, when they recommended the program to friends who also wanted to lose weight, those friends refused to give it a try because they were unwilling to change the way they ate.

Well, as the saying goes, if you do what you've always done, you'll get what you've always got.

And it's true in many many ways, isn't it. I've come to realize on this Ultimate Reset journey that I still held on to many misconceptions about my own diet--which I initially felt was pretty darned good. But here's the deal. While I ate some fruits and vegetables, I didn't eat nearly enough. Now I eat a TON of salads and meals comprised of veggies only, and I love it. Plus it fills me up. Before, I refused to give up my decaf coffee with chemical creamer, telling myself that I gave up everything else--that was one thing I wasn't going to part with. I haven't had a decaf with chemical creamer for 7 days now and I haven't missed it once. This program has forced me to totally revamp my diet 100% and it has been enlightening, to say the least. It has opened my eyes to the fact that if we truly do want to see concrete results we have to be willing to do one thing, and one thing only:

Change.

We have to try new things. Throw out old comfortable habits and try new ones on. We have to let go of our death grasp on routine. Just because we've done something one way for the last 20 years doesn't mean that we have to do it for the next 20. Never in my life did I think that I could switch from coffee to herbal tea and actually like it. Never in my life did I actually consider a vegan diet.

And not that I am suggesting that you guys give up coffee or head for the vegan counter at the grocery store. I am merely suggesting that if you truly do want to transform your body AND your life--maybe it's time to step out of the comfort zone and start opening yourself up to new possibilities--workouts that you would have never even considered before, classes that yesterday seemed too intimidating, recipes that enliven your taste buds again.

Because let's face it. Life is not a dress rehearsal. We do not get a do over. And there is no rule saying that we have to do the same thing every day, or we have to do what everyone else is doing. Let's forge a new path. Our own path.

The path to self-creation.

The path to success.
<span class="text_exposed_show" style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: white; color: #333333; display: inline; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal; font: 13px/18px "lucida grande", tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: left; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px;">
Ahhh the million dollar question......how to lose weight fast??

I bet that this question has been asked at least a million times in the past....six months. I bet it has been searched over and over and over again on Google, YouTube, Yahoo, You Hoo, Boo Hoo, you name it.

The Holy Grail of health and fitness--how can I lose weight fast?

But really, is there an answer to that question? For as many times as this question has been searched, there is an equal number of "professed" cures, solutions, pills, rubs, and creams. And if all of these programs are the key to success, then why is obesity at an all time high? It doesn't make sense.

Ahhh, but it does....to me.

And yes, you'll say that all those "professed cures" were just hoax's, not really ever meant to help people. Maybe you'll say that they are just 'magic pill' solutions that are about as effective as that thing that looked like a vacuum that was intended to cut hair.

But here's the deal. I think that the reason why many of us struggle with weight loss is because we don't ever take a minute to stop and look at the whole picture. We sign up for different programs that address maybe one part of the problem--diet, or exercise...but we never look at everything.

Everything? What do you mean? Isn't that what it's all about--food and exercise?

No. Not even close.

You see, there are a number of factors that contribute to our junk in the trunk. How we view ourselves. Whether we think we're worthy of taking an hour out of our hectic schedule to plug in a Hip Hop Abs DVD. How we've made friends with Mr Food and depend on him daily to manage the stress in our lives. How we run from pillar to post without taking time to think about what we're going to put in our bodies each day, and never stop to think that maybe this kind of behavior is not okay.

It's all off this--all of this stuff contributes to our gaining weight and our inability to lose it--and until we stop to take a hard look at ALL the things that are going on in our lives that contribute to the problem--we are never really going to see long term success.

And what is also equally important to realize is that our weight loss journeys are personal. Individual. Unique. MY weight loss journey will be different than yours, because I am facing different challenges. We each have our own struggles and issues, and therefore to see long term success, we need to develop different plans of attack that are customized to suit our own needs.

So, today, if you are struggling and have no idea where to start take a moment to grab a cup of tea, sit down with a piece of paper and jot down all of the things that you can think of that are driving you to eat the way you do, preventing you from planning decent meals, and keeping you from working out. It's a good start.

And then think about specifically what you can do to change that. Where do you want to be in 6 months time, and how do you want to get there? Be specific. Be realistic. Be positive. This IS a journey you can complete.

Finally, write a note to yourself. Tell yourself that you are worth it. You are absolutely worth it! In fact, you rock! And starting from today--you can achieve the goals you have set out in front of you. Believe.

If you are ready, truly ready to take a look at your life to see what is holding you back from achieving your goals, click here to learn more about my ebook, THE PLAN. You see, I am in mourning. For a dear dear friend--Mr. Food. He has been a faithful companion since childhood, never leaving my side as I deal with life's ups & downs, and celebrate its triumphs. He has comforted me when I was down, acted as therapist when I was confused, and filled in as best friend on cold winter movie nights. He was loyal, never judging. He was mine.

And I will miss him.

It is day 3 on The Ultimate Reset and I have realized that this is not just a journey of weight loss. It is much larger than that. It is life-changing. It is enabling me to re-think the way I live my life, the way I view food, and the way I depend on it.

This program is very structured--which might be a put off for some, but not me. We are told exactly what to eat, and at what time. We are given thorough recipes, and instructions as to when to take our supplements.

No longer can I head to the fridge when I'm feeling bored. No longer can I grab a snack when I'm stressed. The days of random eating are over. The habit of depending on food to fill a need other than fuel is being broken, day by day, meal by meal.

It is an awakening. It is a program that helps you regain control over your 'food' behavior and re-shift your focus and your mindset.

And a lot of this is about mindset isn't it. That's why I wrote my book. It's not all about numbers and percentages. It's about how we view things, specifically our relationship with food. I needed this reset. I needed a strict program to get me back on track again--and this has done the job. I am excited to see what the next 18 days bring.

And what is interesting is that in the last 3 days I haven't craved any of the crap that has haunted me lately. I thought I would, but I haven't. I don't fantasize about chips and chocolates and the wonderful world of snacks and treats.

I like the fact that not only is the program so structured, the meals taste fantastic! I don't lament over my lost love because I have found a new one. Clean, healthy meals that taste fantastic. I have moved on, and this is not a rebound relationship.

So, here are some observations from the first couple of days:

~ I did have a headache on day 1, but it wasn't a killer one. Many people do suffer from headaches for a few days because of the caffeine withdrawal and the fact that your body is in detox mode.
~ I slept well and woke up feeling really AWAKE! Not sluggish at all.
~ I didn't feel as hungry between meal times as I expected. I'm used to eating every few hours and with this program you only eat breakfast, lunch and dinner, and surprisingly, I wasn't that hungry in between. When I did feel hungry I drank water and the hunger passed.
~ I feel really good!! It's amazing, but sometimes I think we don't know how bad we feel until we start to feel good. I just feel good. I have energy and I feel healthy.
~ My midsection is starting to get smaller and I feel leaner already. I don't feel as puffy/bloated/bulky in the midsection as I did before.
~ My stomach aches/discomfort is gone.
~ It does take some prep work/organization to get used to planning and preparing the meals, but once you get used to it, it isn't bad.
~ The meals taste fantastic. I'm not a big fan of kale, but I can get it down, especially with the lemon juice and pine nuts.

So, there you have it--those are my reflections so far with The Ultimate Reset. Be sure to check in a gain soon, as I'll be blogging about this program and more stuff in the future!!

Well guys, my Ultimate Reset Kit is due to arrive on Tuesday, so I thought it was high time I got my butt in gear and got ready for this incredible journey!!

And what an incredible journey it will be!

Here are some of the goodies I bought today!

So today I've decided to get to the heart of the matter and share exactly why I have decided to do the Ultimate Reset anyway. I want to share the personal nitty gritty reasons why doing this program is important to me, and what is driving me to go on this adventure. And in the next 21 days I am going to be very candid and honest about how I am doing, what I think of it all--including my ups and downs, my struggles, and my triumphs.

I'm going to be honest here. I don't think it will be a picnic. I am an admitted food-a-holic, and I am used to eating every 3 hours. I have cheated a lot lately, so not diving into the chip bag when I hear the words "movie night" will be a feat unto itself.

So, if it's going to be hard, then why do it? Isn't losing weight and getting healthy supposed to be fun and easy? Ya, uh, no. BUT, it's going to be worth it, and deep down inside, I know it's time. My body is telling me that it is time to stop, take stock of where I am right now, get the crap and garbage out of my system, and start again. I like the fact that the head honcho's at Beachbody called it a "Reset" because that is essentially what it is--a reset.

So here is my plan (aside from bitching and complaining that I miss chips and chocolate).

~ I am going to do the reset and incorporate some yoga and ab work into my life.
~ I'm going to meditate.
~ And, I think I'll get a pedicure and maybe go wild and get a new hair do, just for fun.
~ I'm going to make it a Zarno overhaul, and I'm looking forward to it!!
~ I may even get a little crazy and sign up for Ukulele lessons!!

It's exciting, I KNOW!!

So, check in again to see how I'm going with The Ultimate Reset as I Reset my body, Reset my spirit, and Reset my Life!!

I'm not sure you'll recognize me when I'm done, haha!!

I think this is one of the biggest factors that holds people back from losing weight.

We're just so damned busy.

I get that. We live in a fast-paced society that operates on drive-thru restaurants and 5-minute roasts.

We pack our schedules so full that we barely have time to pee, let alone eat, where by the end of the day we are so spent from the last 12 hours of go go go that all we want to do is chill chill chill.

We also thrive on the mentality that we're supposed to be busy, active, engaged. We are supposed to be giving our all to the common good, so to actually say "no" to someone is considered sacrilege.

Admitting that we worked through our breaks has become a badge of honor, for that truly is an indicator that we are 'company men.' We are 'go getters.'

So, given this--are you too busy to workout? Will taking 45 minutes to hit the gym or plug in a workout DVD destroy your chances of making partner?

Check out this video to see what I have to say about that, and you might be mildly surprised to see what I think.

So remember, the next time you think about working out and hesitate because you have that big project to get done, or a million things on your 'to do' list, stop and take five deep breaths and tell yourself that you will be MUCH more effective if you take 45 minutes or an hour to devote to yourself. You will be more focused, confident, and better able to handle the challenges that come your way if you get your sweat on to your favorite tunes.

It's not about working hard, it's about working smart. It's about time management, life management.

If you are ready to get in the best shape of your life and enrich your life with the great possibilities that fitness has to offer, click here to join my team for FREE coaching and support.

Here's a story. It's a true one. Names have not been changed to protect the people involved....because...it's about me.

I'm a big history fan, especially war history. And so when the movie Saving Private Ryan came out in theaters I was especially excited. I had waited for months to see this movie, and finally the night came. It was a Sunday night and I was meeting some friends at the local theater for a great night out.

Now since it was a Sunday night, I decided in the afternoon that I'd make the day especially fun and cook myself a nice dinner beforehand. Yes, you guessed it, chicken nuggets, covered with a certain name brand batter and baked in the oven. Cajun flavored.

So, let's fast forward a few hours. My friends and I met at the theater and found great seats right in the middle. Life was good. The lights dimmed. The show began. I looked around to see the little country theater packed--every seat was filled. This was going to be fun. Within minutes the room was filled with the noise of bombs going off and the rat a tat tat of the machine guns. Battle was everywhere as bodies were being flung from one side of the scene to the next. It was great!!

And as I settled in for 2 hours of battle glory I noticed a faint rumbling within. The potatoes were fighting for room with the chicken nuggets, and it was quickly becoming a full on battle.

I'll cut to the chase. It was dark. The move theater was packed. And I very quickly realized....I was going to shit my pants.

Not good.

For some reason the spicy chicken nuggets really didn't like me and they were rebelling in the worst way. I sat there, panic stricken wondering what the heck I was going to do! Crawling over top everyone to head to the bathroom was an impossibility, even if I did want to try and squeeze out a good fart in the sardine-can sized washroom at the back of the room.

So, I did what I do best.

Nothing.

I sat and clenched those butt cheeks together as hard as I could and I prayed to God to keep things from erupting into a full on foul-smelling disaster. I clenched like I had never clenched before. I tried to focus on the story, secretly fearing that my worst nightmare would come true and I'd let slip a thunder boomer loud enough to rattle the windows and make small children wail.

It was agony.

So, why am I sharing this story with you? Well, it was a good lesson and reminder of how profoundly food can impact our bodies, and our lives. Certain foods can truly play havoc with our systems, and therefore it is imperative to learn what foods to embrace, and which ones to avoid.....like the plague.

Because, let's face it, nothing is worse than shitting your pants in a movie theater.

And here I sit, several years later, having come to terms with the fact that my body just does not like certain food. It has become a gassy and bloated mess, to the point where I am eager to rid myself of the sludge that it surely is carry from years of weekend pizza and processed food.

I am ready to come clean, get clean, eat clean and live clean.

I am ready for The Ultimate Reset.

And what exactly is The Ultimate Reset, you ask? Well, it's a 21 day program designed to cleanse your body of all the toxins and garbage it's been collecting for the last 20 years.

It has helped people lose weight, anywhere from 10 lbs to 20 lbs (some have even lost more.)

It has helped people lower their cholesterol and blood pressure too.

And, it has helped people become more at peace within, more emotionally content, and happy too.

And those, my friends, are some reasons why I am going to do the Ultimate Reset.

I am ready to lose that stubborn last 10 lbs that just doesn't seem to want to go. That pooch in my midsection that is holding on for dear life regardless of how much exercise I seem to do. That lump of wrinkled up dough that flaps its ugly head around, leering at me as I do push ups and struggle to see past it to my toes.

I am ready to take control over my body and health again. I want to do a system overhaul so my body is a lean mean living machine for years and years to come.

I am ready to feel not just good, but GREAT! I want to feel clean, and energized and just plain healthy.

I am ready for my clothes to fit better. And yes, I am ready to look smoking hot in a bikini.

I am pulling out all the stops! I have ordered my kit and I am enjoying my last chocolate bar knowing that tomorrow is a new day. Tomorrow is the day that I take back control over my weight and my life.

Tomorrow is the day that I begin the transformation!! And I am excited..

And what exactly does The Ultimate Reset entail?

Well, in a nutshell, it's pretty simple. You are given a 21 day meal plan that is quite specific, along with an assortment of supplements that are designed to cleanse your body of the toxins and restore your body to a healthy state.

It essentially works in 3 phases:

1) Balance Body Chemistry

2) Remove Toxins and Reset Digestion

3) Rejuvenate Your Health

Yes, exercise and diet is a big part of getting fit and healthy, but if those are the only 2 things that make our bums smaller, then why are we all not walking around looking like Angelina Jolie?

I'll tell you why. It's called Misconceptions.

Right now you're probably thinking, what the heck? What does that mean?

Well, for starters, I believe that there are a whole host of issues that contribute to our weight gain and inability to lose weight, and one of them is how we view ourselves. And that is just ONE misconception, to speak of. There are a number of different misconceptions that contribute to the problem, but today I'd like to talk about how we view ourselves.

I made a little video that talks about this in more detail, so please take a look:

Before I close, I'd like to ask you a few questions.

Do you know exactly who you are?

Are you happy with your own personal identity? If not, you can absolutely change that, you know. You can be whoever you want to be, no matter what.

You can always reinvent yourself and create the person you've always imagined.

It can be done.

If you are ready to create a new YOU please join my team and get in the best shape of your life!!
ODE TO JENNY: PLEASE WATCH THIS VIDEO!!

I have a friend named Jenny. We met in the fall when we were both doing Insanity. Jenny is a great gal, and she had some amazing results with the Insanity program, but alas, life got in the way and she fell off the wagon.

This blog is my Ode to Jenny.

Let's face it, we all fall off the wagon at some point. Life happens! We get busy, get sick, get bogged down with family stuff--and then before you know it, two weeks have passed and you haven't strapped on your shoes for a workout once, and your fingers still have salt on them from the 6 bags of chips you've eaten!

I've been there. Oh, how I've been there.

But there are a few things you need to remember. First of all--we ALL fall off the wagon at some point. It's called being human. And rather than spending the next 2 weeks beating yourself up for being weak, make a plan to get back on track and rock that workout like you usually do.

So, Jenny, if you're sitting at home feeling all down because you've lost that loving feeling, do not despair!! Zarno and the gang are here waiting for you and KNOW that you can do it!! So, here are a few tips/thoughts about this whole 'falling off the wagon' bit.

1) First and foremost, it is important to FORGIVE yourself!! Unless you are the Bionic woman (and yes, I'm old enough to know who that is), you are human and life happens! You aren't a robot, so it's okay to not be perfect all the time. And the way I see it, perfection is highly overrated. Some of the best times I've had is when I'm NOT perfect. You're GOOD!!

2) No matter how long you fall off that wagon for, it will ALWAYS stick around and wait for you to jump back on again! That is the beauty of the wagon. It is as loyal and faithful as an old dog. So just know, that when you are ready to get rolling again, the wagon will be there waiting for you to hop back on, and get your sweat on again.

3) It can be done! Sure, your first workouts might suck a bit--but that doesn't mean they will always suck. Pick your favorite workouts and spend a week doing those. Do workouts that aren't going to make you want to barf, but instead get you enthused about working out again. Before you know it, your body will start to remember that fantastic feeling of having completed a great power session, and you can celebrate a job well done.

4) Throw the crap out! If you still have chips and garbage in your house--get rid of it!! The act of getting rid of that stuff will in itself be liberating and feel wonderful!

5) Make a plan. Take a few minutes to sit down and write down your thoughts about this whole journey.....why you fell off the wagon, how you're feeling, how you want to feel, and how you're going to achieve that. This will help you feel more in control of the situation.

6) Get off your ass. Yes, I said it. Get off your ass and just do something. You will feel better for it. And you will thank me later!

So there you have it, folks!! I think that a lot of us have likely fallen off the wagon lately, with Christmas, flu season, and general life business. It's okay. Don't worry--just get back on!! What are you waiting for!!

And, if you are looking for a supportive team to connect with as you go on your health and weight loss journey, look no further! I have a fantastic discussion thread on the go and I would LOVE to have you on board!

One would think that if you decided to lose weight the entire world would let out a collaborative whoop!! But, sadly, that is not always the case.
Sometimes our friends and family can be our loudest cheering section, but not always.

They may not necessarily understand what we're doing, or why we're doing it. Our journey for fitness may be viewed as a reminder that they too are in a place where they don't want to be.

Whatever the case, you need to be aware of how your family sees your quest for fitness and then find ways to deal with it so that it doesn't become the one thing that sabotages your chances for success.
Check out the video above to see more about this and hear what I have to say about dealing with this stuff.
And, if you are ready to transform your life and are looking for a supportive team to get healthy with, look no further!!
Okay, so I'll admit. I'm not exactly the Sporty Spice type. I sucked at sports when I was a kid.

I run, but I'm a middle of the pack kind of runner. Not in the lead, not bringing up the rear.

You won't see my pic on the cover of Sports Illustrated.

So, why would I sign up to be a Beachbody Coach? Don't you have to be an elite athlete to do that? Complete with rock hard abs and chiseled shoulders?

No, I wouldn't say so. I've worked out for years, and I've worked at a major running store, but I wouldn't call myself elite.

I'd probably call myself regular. (the word ''normal" doesn't really fit, in my world, haha)

I've been a fan of the Beachbody programs for quite some time, however, going back to the day when I ordered my own copy of P90X and joined my buddy Greg's personal team.

I wanted a change. I needed to get fit, and had heard some great reviews of P90X from some people in my world.

And it delivered.

So, fast forward a couple of years to this October, when I heard that the Beachbody head honchos were going to allow us Canucks to join the ranks as coaches, it didn't take me long to sign up.

Here are a few reasons why I am a coach.

1) I believe in fitness, and not just fitness for the fit, or fitness for the fast and the skinny--but fitness for us all. For the larger than life, for the slow and the less than confident. For those of us out there who know we need to make changes but have no idea just how to even begin.

I think that there are a lot of people out there, lurking in the shadows of the fitness world who do want to get engaged in a weight loss journey, but taking that first step is too damn intimidating. I get that. I've been there. And I also know that knowing that you have someone in your corner who is cheering you on and truly believes that you can do it--can be the one single factor that propels you to success. I am the one in your corner, cheering you one, believing in you--when even you may not.

2) I've walked the walk, so I know what it's like to struggle and flounder, hate the treadmill, loathe the calorie chart. I am someone who gets where you are coming from, and from that experience, I have something to offer--hope.

3) It's fun. I get such a charge out of hearing people's stories--what their background is, why they want to make changes, and how they are succeeding--today. I love getting to know people from all over the world and seeing them grow as they take the steps toward creating a healthier version of themselves.

4) I give a damn. Plain and simple.

So, if you're out there right now, feeling all fluffy and fat, and hopeless and helpless, know that there is one person right now who is in your corner, cheering you on, knowing you can do it.

Me.

And if you are ready to take the first steps to getting healthier, creating that new you that you've been dreaming of, wait no more.
Whooo Hoooo!! It's my birthday today!!! Yahooo!! Bring out the cake! Light the candles!! Let's get this party started!!

So, it's just after 9 am and I'm still in bed. I have enjoyed the morning snuggling with my boy and lingering over a delightful breakfast in bed of crepes, nutella, and banana courtesy of my awesome husband. And now I'm sipping on a coffee as I blog about my birthday. Life is good!

And I know most people over the age of 20 don't shout their birthdays on the roof tops for the world to hear. As we get older the special day evolves from being a day to celebrate getting a year older to a day to dread getting a year older. It's all about the age--the number. And so as the numbers increase, our enthusiasm for the day starts to wane. It becomes a reminder that we are indeed getting older, and now it's official. It reminds us that our bodies are less flexible, our skin a bit saggier. We become humble, mentioning the occasion to only a few, telling ourselves that we don't expect lavish gifts, or big 'to do's', because, after all, it's just another day.

So here's the deal. I love birthdays, especially mine. I tell my friends about the day, I tell my husband how I want to celebrate it. In fact, I've already posted it on Facebook as a way to celebrate the big event. Am I getting older? Sure, but I was yesterday too! We all get a bit older each day, but who cares? The alternative to not getting older is not being alive, and isn't that the whole point? Isn't that what we're celebrating? Being alive? Being born! And frankly, I'm damn happy to have been born! Thanks Mom and Dad for getting 'busy' all those years ago and making a baby! Thanks Mom, for giving birth to me! I'm glad you did it!!

And I guess I see birthdays a bit differently. Like I said, it's a day to celebrate life. My life. And as corny as that sounds, I think that it's very important to celebrate our own lives. For one thing--they're awfully short in the whole scheme of things, they're precious, and we only get one. We don't get 'do over's' so we need to be vigilant about making good use of the ones we have. And given this, birthdays are a great reminder to celebrate not this one particular day, but to celebrate each and every day. It's a reminder to introduce passion and joy into our spirits and souls and do a proverbial Whoooo Hoooo about our lives and the wonderful people in them!

One other reason I love birthdays is because of the presents. Anyone who knows me knows, I love presents. Every year on my birthday I ALWAYS buy myself a birthday present. I actually started my little custom years ago when I was single, but now hit has continued to where it's a fun part of my birthday. Sure, I get presents from my family and friends, but I always take the time to buy myself one too. And I always make sure to buy something for myself that I wouldn't normally buy. It has to be fun. Ya, this might sound a bit corny, or a tad materialistic, especially since I'm a bit older--because let's face it--a common belief out there is that presents are for kids. But here's the deal. I think presents, whether they're birthday, Christmas, or Mother's Day presents are very very important. They are a symbolic way of telling ourselves and our loved ones that we're important. We're special. We're worth it. They're a way of celebrating our loved ones, and showing how much we are valued. And that, to me, is something that we need to do every single year. When we get into that mode of not buying presents because we're too old, or because Christmas is just for kids, or because we don't need anything--we stop celebrating ourselves and making ourselves 'worth it.' We stop feeling the joy and excitement for the day and what it really symbolizes--which is a day to rejoice in life itself and the glory of being that wonderful YOU!

And yeah, I never think of my birthday as a day to remind myself that I'm getting older. It's a day to look back on the past year and reflect on all the good things that have happened, and what I've accomplished. It's a day to make plans for the next year and add a few new tasks to my bucket list. I'm quite proud of the fact that I wrote my first book this year, and have decided to officially start on a second. I've had a story rumbling around in my head for some time now, and so this year I will make it a priority to get started on this next book. I'm happy that I've become a Beachbody coach and am excited to see the results I've gotten from completing the Insanity program, and so this year I will be working hard to incorporate a lot more strength training into my regime to see where that takes me.

Finally, I see my birthday as a day to feel thankful for all the blessings in my life, for which there are many, like my good health, my amazing family, and my wonderful friends. I have been blessed in so many ways, and today is a day to take a minute to really savor all the love in my life.

And, so there you have it! That is why I LOVE Birthdays!!

And happy birthday to YOU!! I know that there are many of you celebrating this month, and so I am sending you Happy Birthday Vibes your way! May your day and year be filled with love and laughter and good health too!!

Ok, I'll be the first to admit that I'm not really the "Sporty Spice" kinda girl. I don't have long graceful arms and legs that seem to fly through the air as I gracefully sprint down the road, or perform push up jacks, or suicide jumps like I was born doing them.

I'm short, and slow, and that's okay. When I'm in the middle of a push up jack or an oblique push up I probably look more like a marshmallow trying to bend itself in half. I do my best though and I succeed--not because I was gifted a genetically talented set of legs or arms, adept at running quickly, or playing different sports. I succeed because of one very small and simple fact:

It's all in your head.

What??

Years ago I ran a full marathon. 26.2 miles of sweat and pain and sheer grit. There were many times I wanted to throw in the towel and hit the nearest Tim Horton's for an extra large double double and a cheese croissant. However, what kept me going was not my body--it was my mind. It refused to let my feet stop moving, even when it hurt like the blazes of hell.

In fact, a lot of runners out there will train by running the last few grueling miles of the course first. They will find the route and practice running it time and time again--feeling strong. That feeling of power and confidence gets etched in their mind and soul, and come race day--when they hit the last and toughest part of the run, the memory kicks in and their body has a much easier time finding that reserve of energy and strength because it's used to feeling strong when it runs that part of the route.

Cool eh!

Your mind plays an integral part in success--not only in the exercise department, but in life in general. If you think you can't--well, you can't. It's as simple as that. But if you tell yourself that you're strong, and powerful, and really practice feeling that way--pretty soon your body will start believing it.

So, when you're slugging through month 2 of Insanity, and really hating those moves, why not take a day and fast forward to the end when you're generally feeling pretty bagged out, and do those moves feeling strong and refreshed. Focus on imagining yourself powering through them, and visualize your body getting stronger with each jump and each squat. Tell yourself over and over again that you are powerful, you are strong, you are powerful, you are strong. And then when you actually do the workout, maybe, just maybe your body will remember what you've told it, and you will be able to pump out a few more reps.

And while you're doing that workout, rather than looking at the tv or the DVD player, staring at the timer bar or the cast doing the moves, thinking about how tired you are and how much you want to quit--keep your eyes off the tv and go into your own mental space where you can draw from your own reserve of power and energy. Focus on yourself and how strong you are, not on the tv and how much time is left before you get a water break.

Yes, easier said than done, but this stuff takes practice.

You can do it, you know. You don't have to have long graceful arms and legs. You don't have to look good in spandex. (I sure don't!) Focus on the power that you have deep within you, and then get in there and find it! It is there!!
You browse site after site, looking for things that will help you achieve your goals, make you fitter, make you leaner, make you happier.

Because we all know that once you lose that weight, you'll be happy, right?

That's what I thought.

I was convinced I'd enjoy life more, and people would like me better if I was skinnier.

And so today, although I've got a number of things I'd like to blog about, I've decided to blog about happiness.

I saw this picture on a friend's Facebook wall today, and it struck a chord with me.

It's interesting isn't it. Can you picture the scene? This creative and intelligent boy in school, surrounded by his wrinkled and uptight elders, telling them that they didn't understand life because they didn't get that one of the best goals in life is just to be happy?

It made me pause, and think.

Are you happy, truly, filled to the brim with joy, right this very minute? Do you like your 'lot in life'? Are you who you want to be, and where you want to be?

Good question eh.

And here's the deal, you might be wondering, what the heck does this have to do with health and fitness?

The answer is.....

Everything.

Why are you working out? Why do you want to lose weight?

Who do you eat obsessively, or do self-destructive things to your body?

How is getting fit and losing weight going to change your life? Will it make you happier, or will the sadness, the inner demons, the discontent be waiting there for you, just around the corner? Will they haunt you and lurk, waiting for your will power and resolve to falter so they can tempt you back into that giant size bag of chips or that extra large cone?

And here's a question, what does it truly take to be happy? Money? Status? Career achievement? Family? Health? Friends?

I ask these questions for a number of reasons. If you're visiting this page because you want to lose weight, that is great! The Beachbody programs are fantastic, and hey, I'm an awesome coach (just saying), but the first thing that you need to do is to take a very careful look at what is going on inside your heart, in your life, and really think about how happy you are. And if you're not overly thrilled with where you are at this present moment, of if you haven't had a good belly laugh, or felt pure joy in a very long time, then you need to do some inner reflection and think about why. What is going on to make you feel the way you do, and then find a way to change things.

I'll let you in on a little secret, one that I learned a very long time ago, one that changed the way I live my life:

Ready?

Life is not a dress rehearsal. We don't get a do-over. We don't get a repeat.

Today is the day to take the bull by the horns and get out there and truly experience each and every day. Today is the day to make your 'bucket list' and then set out to accomplish every single thing on that list. And the things on your list don't have to be biggies. They can be simple, like volunteering at a local shelter, or running a half-marathon. Maybe you've always dreamed of learning how to play the ukulele. The sky is the limit!!

And once you start rejoicing in the simple pleasure of life, celebrating each and every day that comes along, feeling pure passion about where you are, who you are, and what you're doing--you may just find that the inner demons that have been driving you to head to the cookie bag and the chip bowl, the same ones who tell you that you'll never fit into those skinny jeans--you may just find that they have buggered right off.

I don't know a lot of things, but I do know a few simple truths:

1. Life is short, so celebrate each and every day to its fullest. Don't worry about being proper all the time. Laugh, joke around, be silly, get your hands dirty.

2. You CAN get fit and health if you make a commitment to yourself that you are worth the time and energy that it requires to succeed. You are worth it. And if you really think about what you are putting into your mouth and sweat your ass off on a regular basis, you will see results.

3. Happiness doesn't come in a dollar bill. It comes in smiles across good meals, holding hands, cuddles on the couch, good belly laughs, and the comfort of good friends and family.

So, if you need help losing weight, my advice to you, as a Beachbody coach, is to do things to make yourself happy, commit to yourself, and work to success.

And know, that I am here, cheering you on, each and every step of the way.

Seriously.

Ahhh the dreaded "calorie" talk.

We've all heard it, haven't we. It's almost as bad as the 'birds & the bees' talk we got when we were 12 eh. Everyone groans when the topic comes up and pretends not to be listening.

We all know food has calories, and that taking in too many will make our asses look like marshmallow's on steroids. And we all know that we should be keeping track of how many calories we're taking in on a daily basis. However, it just doesn't seem like a lot of fun.

So what should we be doing then? And what do I think?

Well, here's the deal. Years ago, when I tried to lose weight by counting calories, I went a bit overboard on the whole calorie restriction thing. I went from counting my calories to severely restricting my calories, to the point where I was only taking in about 1100 calories per day. Needless to say I had hardly any energy to walk to the bathroom for a pee during the commercial breaks of my favorite tv show, much less do a decent workout. In essence, I was starving myself, and although I lost weight, it wasn't a long term solution. Who can keep that kind of nonsense up for any length of time? I sure couldn't. While I was doing it, I'd give myself one cheat day (and that in itself is a topic for a whole blog post). During the week when I was 'eating properly' I'd lay in bed at night and fantasize about all the delectable treats I was going to snarf down on my 'fun day.' Cherry strudel, croissants, fries, chips, chocolate--you name it--I was going to eat it. And when the monumental day would arrive--I would do just that--inhale anything and everything I could get my greasy little fingers on--to the point where I'd eat myself into a sugar induced coma, and go to bed literally hating myself for such self-abuse.

Needless to say, it didn't work. I couldn't maintain that kind of lifestyle, for one thing. The cheat day behavior wasn't healthy in the least, and I had next to no energy to workout.

Eventually, however, I did find something that did work, and I'd like to share it with you.

It's called....wait for it....being realistic.

What? Being Realistic? That's it?

Well, let me explain.

If you want to be healthy (and yes, lose weight), you have to be realistic about how you want to live your life. Is starving yourself going to work in the long run? Absolutely not! So get the notion of extreme calorie restriction out of your head. It doesn't work, for many reasons.

Also, if you want to achieve long term health and success, you will have to wrap your head around the fact that you are going to have to exercise. Plain and simple. There are NO quick fixes here, and if you haven't already, it's time to build an effective workout program into your daily schedule.

So, you need to have enough calories to fuel your body for the day to day functions, and you also will need the energy to get some good workouts in.

When I started the Insanity program I really came to grips with the fact that food is fuel. And if I want that machine of a body I own to run properly, I was going to have to put good quality fuel into it. And that means not only enough calories, but good quality calories as well.

The Insanity Nutrition Guide uses the Harris Benedict Equation to help you determine how many calories you're going to need each day. And to begin with, we're going to assume that you're working out on a regular basis.

(This is right from the guide.)

Step 1:

For Women: 655 + (4.35 x weight in pounds) + (4.7 x height in inches) - (4.7 x age in years)

For Men: 66 + (6.23 x weight in pounds) + (12.7 x height in inches) - (6.8 x age in years)

Step 2:

Take that number from above and multiply by the level of exercise listed below:

1.2 = Sedentary: Little or no exercise
1.375 = Lightly Active: Light exercise (1 to 3 days/week)
1.55 = Moderately Active: Moderate exercise (3 to 5 days/week)
1.7 = Very Active: Hard exercise (6 to 7 days/week)
1.9 = Extremely Active: Hard daily exercise and/or a physical job

Step 3:

The number that you now have will tell you your calorie needs for weight maintenance. Now, you will adjust this number up or down, depending on your weight loss or gain goals:

See below:

~ For weight loss, subtract 500 calories per day from your number in step 2.
~ For weight maintenance, do nothing, just use the number from step 2.
~ For weight gain, add 250 to 300 calories per day to your number from step 2.

Now that you have figured out your calorie needs, you may see that you are currently either eating too much or too little. It is also possible for people who want to lose weight to not be eating enough. It is so easy to fall into the trap of thinking that 'less is better' and do what I did. 1100 calories is way to little to eat--especially since I was also trying to exercise. As it stands, my caloric intake for weight loss is at about 1800. I eat considerably more now than I did before, but I also have the energy I require to perform well during my workouts, and I never feel starved.

I also eat breakfast (always plain oatmeal and egg whites), and every 2 1/2 to 3 hours after that. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!! By eating breakfast and every few hours after that, you are kick starting your metabolism, keeping your blood sugar leveled out, and preventing your body from going into starvation mode (where it holds onto fat because it thinks you are starving it).

So, my friends, the lesson of the day is that YES, you do need to keep track of your calories, but not to starve yourself. You want to ensure that you are taking in enough calories and enough of the good stuff.

If you haven't already, check out www.myfitnesspal.com. It's a great website that will help you not only track your calories, but also help you determine if you're eating enough protein/carbs/fat, because, let's face it--your body needs both lean protein and good carbs to function.

Eat well, live well!!
So, I was working out the other day, and a thought crossed my mind. It went a little like this:

Why the HELL am I doing this??

This sucks. It hurts. It isn't fun. I'm not coordinated, or fast, or ...well, you get the point. I'm not sure when the thought hit me...if it was while I was squeezing out a few more plank pushups, or ski abs, or it if was while I was jumping and squatting and punching all at the same time....I'm just not sure--but at some point in the workout it occurred to me--this really isn't a whole lot of fun!

I'm not smiling. I'm not chatting with friends. I'm flailing around like a newborn calf, sweating and grunting like a wild boar in heat--and I'm constantly looking at the timer on the screen to see how much longer I have to endure this.

So why on earth do I do this, day in and day out--if it isn't fun? Isn't working out supposed to be fun? Aren't we supposed to enjoy it?

Well, here's what I think.

I did finish the workout--as much as I struggled, as much as I hated it, and as much as I cursed 'really bad curse words' at Shaun T. I did my level best--kept going when it hurt--and by the end of the adventure I was on all fours, heaving like I had just given birth, and feeling quite proud of myself indeed. In fact, I felt pretty damn good.

I felt like a rock star. Make that a superstar.

And then it hit me--it's not necessarily supposed to be fun!

Maybe it's supposed to hurt, and make us struggle, and make us heave. Because, when we're heaving, and jumping, and squatting, and punching and swearing--that's when the magic happens!

That is when we start really challenging ourselves, and believing in ourselves. We prove to ourselves that we actually can do this stuff! We are athletes after all!

I used to think that only athletes and people who were 'genetically predisposed' to having good bodies were the only ones who could get nice abs and toned arms. Now I know that I was so so wrong.

I know that if I work--and I mean truly work--haul ass and sweat and struggle--I can achieve what I want. I can be who I want.

And it is because of that I am motivated to do this every day. I struggle and I see results.

I believe in myself, and I become confident. I become the person I've always wanted to be. The best version of myself possible.

And can all of that come from an Insanity workout? Yes. And the answer is Yes because it's hard. It challenges you to do work harder than you've ever worked before. It challenges you to dig deep within yourself and muster up that reserve of strength you never thought you had. It challenges you to believe in yourself.

And when all is said and done, and you're on all fours, panting like a boar, feeling like he just gave birth--you'll know it's worth it.

To close, take a look at this video I made a while ago about a serious condition that affects many athletes, called OSTS: You don't want to miss it!!

Dig Deep, my friends!!

I think it's pretty safe to say that we all want to be fit and healthy. We want to feel good in our own skin, and we want to enjoy an abundance of energy.

However, finding the Holy Grail of "Holy Crap You Look Good" is easier said than done. If you take a look around any mall or restaurant you will notice that there are a fair number of people out there who are packing more pounds than they should.

And I get that. For years I too carried a few extra pounds on my arse and belly. I got sucked into the world of stress eating, turning to food to comfort me when times were tough. I convinced myself that I wasn't one of those people, you know, the ones who had ripped abs and toned arms.

Those people were just lucky.

So I continued to eat nacho's on Friday night, ice cream on Saturday, and pizza on Sunday, convinced that I was eating healthy. I plugged bread and pasta into my mouth on a daily basis, and never thought much of eating boxed food, because it had a green check mark on it.

And yet, between croissants and chips I continually despaired that I couldn't seem to lose the weight! What was I doing wrong? I was eating healthy....most of the time!

Well, here's the deal. I hadn't gotten to that point where I was being real with myself. Truly, and utterly REAL.

I let myself believe what I wanted to believe, because it was easier that way. What? Cut out processed foods and sugar from my diet? Are you kidding me? Seriously? Do significantly tough workouts almost daily? Are you nuts!

I was poking my head up somewhere where it's nice and warm and dark, and wasn't facing the fact that if I truly and seriously did want to get healthy, I was going to have to work for it.

I was going to have to cut some crap, okay a lot of crap from my diet.

I was going to have to do workouts that made me sweat and huff and puff, and do them regularly.

I was going to have to make a commitment to put the effort into this that success required.

For years I had always believed that people with ripped abs and toned bodies were lucky. It was pure genetics. I didn't actually think they worked for it, nor did I believe that it was something that I could accomplish.

But here's the deal. It is. Sure, I haven't built my 6 pack yet, but after doing these Beachbody programs I look 100% better than I did before. My mid-section is slimmer and more toned. My arms don't look like spaghetti noodles, and my arse isn't bulging out of my jeans like a sausage factory! I feel better, I'm happier, and way more confident too!

So maybe you're at the point where you're really and truly hating the place you're at right now. Maybe you're sick of bulging out of your jeans. Maybe you can't face a mirror another day. And just maybe you are like I was, convinced that you couldn't possibly handle a Beachbody workout program, because you're just not in shape. Maybe you're convinced that you will never achieve your goals so why bother trying.

Here's the deal. The answer is yes. Yes you can handle a Beachbody workout! Sure, it might be tough, but that doesn't mean you can't do it! We all struggle at this stuff, but it doesn't mean we don't see results.

And yes, you can cut crap from your diet and survive. Your body will not crumble into dust if you stop putting brown sugar on your oatmeal and a mountain of cheese on your eggs. You can do it too.

And yes, once you get real with yourself and make that commitment to yourself to invest in your future, you will see results. It might take a day or two, or even a month or 2, but it will happen. Slowly but surely.

Invest in yourself.

You are worth it.
Well, it's Saturday afternoon and I'm just hanging out, sipping a Shakeology and contemplating life in general.

It's been quite some time since I entered a blog post, shame on me! Now that I've gotten a bit of a handle on this 'coaching' thing, I am now ready to post on a regular basis. I enjoy 'chronicling' my Beachbody journey, and sharing my Insane experiences with you, so it will be fun to start writing more about this adventure.

And what an adventure it has been!!

I am a new woman! Or I feel like it, at least.

Yes, the big wigs at Beachbody-ville knew what they were doing when they named this Insanity. There is really no other way to describe it. It's bloody Insane!! Right from the get go it forces you to push your body to the max with exercises ranging from doing pushups and punches and running--all at the same time! It makes you question your ability, your will to succeed, and it forces you to dig deep within yourself to unearth a hardened gritty determination that can only be found from doing things like power jumps and suicide drills. It makes you believe in not only yourself, but in your ability to succeed.

And the thing that I find very interesting about this whole experience is just how empowering it can be. Insanity and P90X are both known for being very tough, especially Insanity, and I think most people generally talk themselves out of even trying simply because of its reputation. It goes without saying that this program will make you sweat, and so to even contemplate starting it, much less completing it is a feat unto itself.

So, the question begs to be answered, is it really that tough?

I have a few things to say in response to that question.

For one thing, yes, it is physically demanding. The first time I did the workout the warm up itself damn near killed me, and then when I got to the actual workout part, I made the mistake of thinking, well, it's only 20 minutes long! How hard could that be? Pretty freaking hard, I'll tell you that much. But what makes it 20 minutes of sheer hell is the fact that A) there are hardly any breaks and B) the exercises are truly unlike any other exercise you may have done in the past. You are expected to jump high in the air and then flop down and do 32 push-ups, followed with some plank running and ski abs. And then just when you think you've had enough you get to move down into a squat position and jump back into the air for what seems like 15 minutes but is actually only 30 seconds! And don't get me started on suicide drills!

So, ya it's tough because you're doing all sorts of things that your body isn't necessarily used to. And don't forget the fact that many of us (including myself) have been lured into thinking that if we go for brisk walk or do some light weights at the gym that we're doing one hell of a workout. We don't even break a sweat yet we head to Tim Hortons for a chocolate strudel because we've just 'worked out.' So when we strap on our shoes for a round of Insanity, we are shocked and dismayed at just how physically demanding it is. Sweat? It didn't look like I sweated much when I did my first workout; it looked like I had just gotten out of the shower! AND run 25 miles!

So, yes it's tough, but is it sooo tough that the average Jo walking down the street can't do it? Is it too tough?

No. Plain and simple, no. What I think gets people, the general population is that it makes us work. It makes us question our abilities, and it forces us to recognize that there are no quick fixes here, and in a lot of cases, we're just not used to that. We're used to living in a world where we can take a pill and get skinny in 2 weeks. We can walk into a clinic with wrinkles, and walk out looking like Jessica Biel. If we want it, we get it--right now. But it doesn't work that way with Insanity. If we want to look like the guys and gals who have had amazing transformations with Insanity we will have to work, and work damn hard to get them. There is a reason why the shirt says, "I earned it'. Because you'll have to. You'll have to commit to showing up every day, doing your best, struggling, and yes hating it. You'll have to do things that don't necessarily feel great or are a lot of fun. But if you do commit, you will reap the benefits of having a stronger, leaner body. You will be fitter, firmer and faster. You will be grateful that you did it.

And what you may be really asking right now is can I do it? The answer is simple.

Yes.

Will you be glad you did?

Absolutely!!

Well, my friends, it's been quite the ride. As you may know, I jumped on the Insanity Train a few weeks ago. Okay, more like crawled, simply because my jeans were so tight from all the chips and beer that I was pretty sure that if I swung my leg very high I would have ripped the ass out of those tight jeans! But, alas, I made friends with Shaun T and his infamous Insanity Program and I haven't looked back.

So, how has it been, you ask?

The word HELL comes to mind.

But I won't say that, I'm a coach.

Really though, it's tough, yes. It's a real bugger at times, but nothing that has made me want to quit. The thing is, I think that we as society have gotten used to the whole Quick Fix Life. We watch tv and the character's problems are solved in 30 minutes or less. We go to the movies and that unattainable love is found in under 2 hours, with a side of popcorn and a gallon of pop. We can now buy roasts that cook in less than the time it takes to set the table, and it is a crime if we actually have to wait more than 30 seconds for our food to arrive at the table when we dine out.

So what? You're telling me that if I want to get into the best shape of my life that A) I'm going to have to actually work for it, and B) It's going to take longer than 3 days? I'm not sure I'm up for that! And don't get me started on being sore!!

The thing is, getting fit and healthy takes work. It takes commitment, and for those of us who are already down and out because our ass looks like a marshmallow on steroids, it can be hard to stay positive when you want to barf every time you hear the word "suicide drill." Ski abs? Are you kidding me? I could hurl just at the thought of them. It's easy to get so down about our current shape, that it becomes next to impossible to motivate ourselves to even try. Maybe we've been trying for years, struggling and floundering, jumping on band wagon after band wagon, trying everything from pills to detox that the idea of trying one more thing is very hard to digest. So when we do finally start, and the workout feels like it was specifically designed to kill you (okay I'm exaggerating....a bit), it's hard to keep going, and push play the next day. We convince ourselves that we'll never do it, this kind of workout is only for athletes, so why bother.

But, here's the deal. I've learned a few things over the last few weeks.

1. Yes, this workout is hard. There is no getting around it. But, it also produces amazing results if you stick with it, try your best, and do it on a very regular basis. It works.
2. NO ONE and I mean NO ONE actually does a great job at the workouts the first time they do it. That's why it's a home workout program. So others don't have to witness the grunting, the farting, the swearing--it's just not a pretty sight. I'd be curious to know just how many times Shaun T has been told to F right off in the last few years. I bet it's a pretty high number. We all suck at the beginning. We all take breaks, we all struggle with the floor drills, and we all have trouble jumping like Tonya. HOWEVER, if we stick with it, (and avoid getting hurt), over time we find that slowly but surely we get better. We don't swear as much, we can work longer before we pretend to need a pee so we can take a break. Our form is better, and we can actually jump higher than a can of soda. We get stronger, and more confident.

So, do I recommend this program? Hell YES! It's tough, but it works. It will make you question yourself and want to cry. But if you stick with it, you will see results, and there will be a sadistic part of you that gets hooked on it.

Trust me.
